The Santa Caterina market was founded as a city market in 1845, in the land where there used to be a convent with the same name that burned down in 1835 during the Torín conflicts.
Decades later, in the post-war period, since there was a shortage of food, the market became a food provider for neighbor cities, like Sant Adrià, Santa Coloma and Mataró. People would take trains to come buy food at the Santa Caterina market.
The market was entirely renovated between 1997 and 2004 – the project was led by Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue. One of the most important changes was the colored roof, inspired by the work of Gaudí.
