18 Feb Barcelona has history

Today we’ll tell you more about the Roman occupation of Barcelona, which was the theme of last Friday’s immersion class.
The Romans began colonizing the Iberian Peninsula in 201 b.c. after winning a war against the Carthaginians that lasted over a decade.
After the war the Romans build two important cities in the Mediterranean: Emporiae (Empúries) and Tarraco (Tarragona).
Between the years 13 and 15 a.d. the Roman emperor Augustus orders the search of a place for a new colony. They choose a hill called Mons Taber that faces the sea – nowadays, Plaza Sant Jaume is built right on Mons Taber).
The new colony, Barcino, grows rapidly. Between the 1st and 4th centuries a wall is built to protect the city.
The walls of Barcino have the function of protecting the city. They are an example of Roman military engineering. The wall is 1270 meters long, with four entrances and a citadel for military surveillance.
